NHL President’s Trophy glitch

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

I got this email from Shaun:

Hey, I found a small error I thought you might want to be aware of.
The simulation somehow reported a case where Pittsburgh lost all 3 games in regulation but still won the President’s Trophy. This is of course impossible since they are 3 points back of Chicago.

I attached a picture for reference.

SCS pres trophy glitch
This is really interesting. Thank you Shaun. A bug in my code that is triggered so infrequently. What might cause that? Off to see…

While I’ve got you, twenty thousand fellow human beings visited Sports Club Stats yesterday (the most ever). Thanks.

“We use the real NBA tiebreakers” my ass.

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

Starting with the 2006-2007 season the NBA changed the tiebreakers so the 3 division winners do not automatically get the top 3 seeds. Instead they where reseeded with the top wildcard to determine seeds 1-4. The site does this part correctly.

Starting with the 2008-2009 (?) season they added the stipulation that when reseeding the top 4, a division winner always takes precedence over the wildcard with the same record. I don’t do this. And it affects the current standings.

Jeremy Halperin pointed this out today (thanks Jeremy). I’m working on fixing it, more to follow.
Update:  I believe it is fixed.
Here are the 4 affected teams, using the 50/50 version:

I messed up the NFL odds.

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

JP clued me in yesterday that for many of the NFL games the simulation had the wrong team as the home team.  That means it was giving the wrong team home field advantage.   It’s fixed now, but my error caused the site to show numbers up to 11 percentage points off:

Mea Culpa

I am sorry,

Oppose SOPA and PIPA

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Hi friends, sorry I have not written for so long.

For the rest of today Sports Club Stats is turned off to protest SOPA and PIPA (learn more at Wikipedia.)

Note I sent my senator:

The internet is the goose that lays the golden eggs.
It also allows US copyright laws to be broken.
But we can not allow SOPA and PIPA to fluster that goose.
We have to sacrifice our copyright holders and change our copyright laws.
Our future is in those eggs.

And how I really feel:

Are you nuts? Don’t fuck with the Internet. It is a good thing. All the bad things you imagine about the internet are nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to how good it is. It is short term wasteful and long term futile to try and control the internet. The RIAA can kiss my ass. They remind me of the priests who got all frantic when William Tyndale first mass produced an English bible. Oh my, read a bible without going through a priest.
They burned him at the stake.

Thank you

And thanks Kevin Hartley, Overdeck, and one other I’ve forgotten for figuring out I must be using last years tie breaking rules in time before I had too much egg on my face. (Finally fixed 2 weeks or so ago.)

a wacky, wonderful website…

From BigSoccer:

This is a wacky, wonderful website:…/Sounders.html

If you’ve been following it for a while it is quite addicting but a bit of a roller coaster ride. Great stats, though.

Thanks David. I aim for wacky and wonderful.

World Cup qualifying

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

I’ve added CONCACAF and CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

Mike gave me the idea months ago, and Alex spurred my on with an email yesterday. Thanks.

I’ll do something for the World Cup when it starts. I don’t plan on getting to the other qualifying groups this time around.

Ignore the baseball numbers today

Somethings is broken. I’m off to grab some coffee and then I’ll see whats up. I sound like an addict :)

The historical graphs issue from before is fixed.

[Update: All fixed. The bad numbers this morning where if only 1 team made the playoffs instead of 4]
